| Holes
were dug upto 2.5m deep, one side slopped and one vertical, wooden stakes were placed on the vertical side to protect it.The stone was moved forward on rollers until it tipped into the hole hitting the stakes at an angle of around 30 degrees. It was then hauled upright by gangs of 100 men using ropes. The lintels were levered onto temporary platforms which slowly raised it into position to top the vertical sarsens some 6mr above the ground. |

A
few years ago it was attempted to reconstruct and erect
a great sarsen trilithon using only the technology that was available in bronze age times. It took 130 people six days to fully erect the trilithon containing two six meter uprights weighing 45 tons and a lintel weighing 9 tons. This may give some indication of the size of the task it was for such a great monument to be constructed. Was there a method and science to this? Click Here |
